Classes at The Factory

We will be offering classes highlighting rotating theme areas, so there will be something for all sewers, regardless of experience level or interests. Topics will vary monthly within the week’s theme, offering techniques and projects for beginners, intermediate and more advanced sewers. The emphasis will be on what can you really MAKE and DO with your machine, not just creating lots of little example bits that wouldn’t make a quilt for a mouse. Class members can suggest topics, too...hint, hint!

Sign-Up for the classes as soon as possible. You must pay the fee in advance to be registered for the class.

Currently, The Factory is making new samples and brainstorming for new classes in 2011. We are also asking you, our customers, to give us some input on classes you might like to have in the future. Maybe you saw a cute bag or purse in a department store, or a celebrity on the red carpet, a home dec item on TV or in a store, or maybe you want to just start quilting. There are sew many possibilities! That’s why we are asking for your input. For suggestions, please contact Larry with your class ideas and be sure to include: the machine(s) you own, dates and times good for you, and a brief description of your class idea.

In a class setting, the easiest block would be started first, progressing to the more difficult. The student is introduced to a number of quilting techniques, such as use of fabric, hand piecing, applique, and design, to just name a few. $20.00 for a 2 hr class Every Wednesday.

Get to Know Your Sewing Machine

It doesn’t matter what brand of machine you own, we will show you how to use it! From threading, to winding a bobbin, sewing a seam, checking tensions, and functions of the machine: Blind Hems, Buttonholes, Overcasting. This class is offered at 10:30 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. fee: $20.00 2nd Monday of every month.

2nd Wednesday Wearables Week

This theme covers garment construction from easy to tailored, to take the fear and loathing out of sewing clothes and accessories. Even if you think, “I’ll never try sewing clothes, again!”, come check us out. The topics are planned for a variety of garment-sewing interests, from successful alteration of ready-to-wear to more refined techniques for tailored work and dressy clothes. We’ll explore imaginative garment shapes and clever accent pieces that move into the realm of wearable art. Also within this theme will be the proper set up, stabilizer selection and design considerations for embroidery on the wide range of fashion fabrics used in both bought and created garments.

You will learn techniques for managing sheer to upholstery-weight fabrics and more exotic materials such as vinyls, leather/Ultrasuede, meshes and others. You’ll also make friends with accessory feet and tools that simplify the application of cording, trims, elastic, ruffles and other embellishments. Save money, add convenience and expand your creativity with customized fabric accents, furniture and accessories—it’s not just about drapes, pillows and table runners, anymore. We’ll include classes on proper planning and stabilizers for embroidering linens, towels and other decorator items.

Monogramming and other embroidery techniques to personalize handmade or purchased presents for all ages will be covered. Holiday-themed projects will be offered, along with ideas suitable for charity sewing groups. The topics will be eclectic, but fun!
